ON-GOING RESEARCH PROJECTS

Market and non-market determinants of the co-evolution of the automotive industry in Brazil

This is a longitudinal study of the Brazilian automotive sector in the context of its supply chain, and how industry performance has changed over time with market and non-market pressures.

Cross-national institutions and network determinants of high-tech firms: a cross-national comparison

This study is an investigation of SMEs in the biotech and software industries in different institutional contexts: the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Turkey and Brazil. By drawing on interviews with senior managers (average of 20 firms per country), this research investigates the role of institutions as enablers of innovation and internationalization.

Funding: Erasmus Institute of Management, ERIM; British Academy of Management; CNPq and FAPEMIG (Brazil).

Internationalization of emerging markets MNEs: a study of Vale

This is a study of Vale’s internationalization and de-internationalization strategy under a longitudinal perspective – an analysis of the company since its privatization in 1997.  It is a multi-methods study, which includes interviews with senior executives (59), a survey with executives from the company’s headquarters and from 12 different subsidiaries, and document and media analysis from 2001 to 2014. The goal of this study is to understand the role of market and non-market factors in the evolution of the MNE strategy under the institutional and resource- dependence perspective.

Institutional voids in emerging countries

Institutional void is a concept that has gained relevance in the context of increasing FDI to emerging and less-developed countries in the last 15 years. Despite the growing relevance of institutional voids in explaining survival and performance in riskier environments, the concept has not yet developed in a way that significantly advances institutional and internationalization theory. By drawing on case studies in the Brazilian context, this research tries to understand institutional voids in international supply chains and the transaction costs associated with distinct types of voids.

International joint ventures (IJVs) between developed and developing countries: host country institutions as enablers and constrainers of entrepreneurial firms’ internationalization in less-developed countries

This research examines IJVs between developed and developing countries and how entrepreneurial firms compensate for institutional voids in host countries with different institutional quality. It draws on archive data from 206 firms, and on a survey of 148 valid case studies of firms with IJVs in 52 different countries. Funding Erasmus Research Institute of Management, the Netherlands, and by CNPq, Brazil.
